HD footage appears white
Hey-
I’ve recently purchased a MacBook Pro with a 2.16 GHz processor and 1GB RAM. I have FCP 5.0.1 installed as well as QT 7 Pro installed. However, whenever I try to play back HD footage, only the audio plays and the screen comes up white. Is there something obvious I’m missing here?

What sort of HD footage? What format? How was it captured?

Its footage exported as DVCPRO HD, 960×720. I believe I have the DVCPRO HD codec installed. I don’t see why FCP wouldn’t install it when installing the system files.

Hmmm…you should have the codecs. Was it captured with FCP?

Yep. Well, encoded with FCP via Compressor, anyway…

Well, I’ve got two projects, both showing up white. One was shot on the Varicam and the other was shot on the HVX100. Both were exported from FCP (on another machine) at DVCPRO HD quality using Compressor, both are 960 x 720. If there’s a codec I’m missing, is there somewhere where I can download it?

Well, that was the wrong way to do it. The captured footage already is DVCPRO HD, why did you go thru compressor? Just copy over the original footage that you captured. Drag it from his media drive to yours.
Compressor must have done something funky. No, what was the completely wrong way to go about this. Sorry, don’t mean to be harsh. But you have to know that.
GO back and copy over the original clips. Then you will be able to work with them just fine.

This is an edited project that I exported from Final Cut Pro through Compressor. Anyhow, I can’t even view the raw Quicktime footage either; it’s giving me the same problem. I’m thinking it has to be a video codec issue.

OK, new update. I’ve found the DVCPRO HD codec and copied it to my quicktime plugins…now it works when I import HD footage into Final Cut, but still appears white when I open it in quicktime…any thoughts?
