  • HD / FCP / Kona Workflow question

    Hi all-

I am new to the world of HD and just got handed a HD project to cut next week- I am curious as how to incorporate a convenient/time efficient work flow into the process being that this is my first HD project.

I will be receiving D5 footage and digitizing it via a D5 deck into FCP. I also have a Kona io LH capture card. Ultimately, we will be mastering to HDcam, and also 1060i/60 compressed and streamed as well.

My question is- What device control/capture templates should I use, and also, what should my sequence settings be set to?

Any advice about working with D5 footage or HD workflows within FCP would be much appreciate.
    Thanks in advance

    Mike,

Two very important facts were left out of your post. 1) What is the final destination of the product you will deliver, broadcast TV, filmout??? 2) What type of raid array do you have? Both are essential for answering your question in a meaningful way.

The final destination will be played on a broadcast TV via a focus enhancement server.

The raid array we are using is; ProMax External 2.5TB PCIe.

    Mike,

With the Kona LH, which I also have BTW, you have essentially three choices, you can capture as 1080i uncompressed 8-bit, 1080i uncompressed 10-bit, or DVCProHD. DVCProHD will yield smaller file sizes while maintaining very high quality. Its going to have faster render times too. Many here are using DVCProHD in our workflows, especially for broadcast, and its great for mastering to HDCAM, and imperceptable in side by side comparisons with stuff shot on HDCAM.

If you go that route, just set your Easy Setup for DVCProHD 1080i and start capturing. This sets the Kona card too and you should be ready to rumble, though you may have to set the Kona Control Panel for analog or SDI depending on your choice of input.
