HD editing with HVX and Quad g5
Posted by Mikewake on June 12, 2006 at 6:25 pmHey guys, Im really new to the HD world and need to do some learning fast. I recently recieved a school grant to shoot a short script a buddy and I wrote. We want to shoot in HD and have someone willing to rent me a HVX200 with a few cards for pretty cheap. I own a G5 Quad with 2.5 GB ram and a 500 GB FW/800 drive. Is there a way to monitor the HD timeline without a decklink card? Can you use the camera? If not could someone please give me an idea of a workflow i would be able to use to maybe offline edit with FCP5. Im excited about working in HD but i definitley am relying on these forums to keep me from falling on my face!

June 12, 2006 at 6:56 pmCan’t use the camera, sorry. The only way to do it is either with an AJ-HD1200 or 1400 deck or a capture card. You can view the image thru the camera, but it won’t be a full quality HD image.
Just edit with the DVCPRO HD footage natively. Your drive can handle it. If you have two monitors you can at least use Digital Cinema Preview to view your footage full screen, but for Color correction it won’t work. But what is your final delivery master going to be? That determines a lot of your workflow.

I’m again not certain that you can view the video out via FW.
My understanding is that you can view an still image but not video.
Is that your understanding Shane as well?

June 12, 2006 at 11:47 pmI was doing this all the time at the Panasonic/FCP booth at NAB. I was playing out my DVCPRO HD timeline thru the camera out S-Video to the Panasonic LCD display.
I was not working the booth with the AJ-HD1400 deck, that was Victor. My image ran thru the HVX camera. I have been told by Jan and by Gary that this image isn’t a true passthru HD image that you’d get with the AJ-HD1200 or 140 deck.

June 13, 2006 at 1:39 amInstead of using the Cinema display as a preview monitor. Would it be possible to sacrifice one of my displays, and use one of the DVIs out of my Quad into my HD DLP TV using a DVI-HDMI converter? Would that work.

Shane:
You can’t do this.
Jan, Gary and Barry have indicated as much. No firewire out to cam to component.

We might be confusing what was occurring.
You say you were taking firewire out to the cam, and then component out of the cam to a HD monitor? Or something else?
That’s what I don’t think is possible.
Is that how you were monitoring HD stuff?
Let me know, because I’m going to try it if it is possible.

June 14, 2006 at 6:47 pmAlthough I am not certain of the exact setup on Shanes station at NAB, I was not there for setup. The HVX200 will not pass from the NLE through it to the component analog cable and onto an HD monitor. You could set the camera for SD output and it would work however. This might be part of the confusion?
Anyhow, best to all.
Jan
