  • HD-DVD authoring and the new Toshiba HD-DVD player

    Hi,

I’ve been doing some testing with HD-DVD authoring in Apple DVD SP 4.03. This version of the app is supposed to comply with the spec. It plays correctly on a G5, but when I’ve tried it in the new Toshiba players (first on the market), the videos play but menu navigation does not work. This is DVD-R (Toshiba manual says this is OK). The same player will play – and correctly navigate – an SD DVD authored and burned on the same system as the HD-DVD. On the HD-DVD, only the chapter skips work. Has anyone tested this and if so what are your results? Thanks.

    Sincerely,
    Oliver

That’s a known issue right now. Here’s a thread from Apple’s forum which might shed some more light:

I made an HD-DVD using Ulead’s DVD MovieFactory 5.0, and burned it to DVD+RW (using DVD Decryptor).

I took it to my local Bestbuy store to test it out on a display unit. The Toshiba recognized the dvd as HD-DVD (that’s what displayed on the front panel of the Toshiba). Then it popped up with my menu. The problem is the Bestbuy store did not have the remote control.

To get it to play, we hit the stop button, then play button on the unit, and it went right into the HD Title (which was a combined title of some sample raw HDV *.m2t clips I got from an online HDV resource).

The Authoring program used them “asis” after they were quickly converted to *.mpg in MediaStudio Pro 8. No re-encoding was done, and they looked excellent on the HD Display.

If only they had the remote control for me to test menu navigation and chapter skips…

    Regards,
    George

    Oliver,

As I understand it, DVDSP currently does only a subset of the HD-DVD Spec, and Apple has stated that these discs play correctly only on a G5 with Apple DVD Player. DVDSP 5 is supposed to be the first spec-compliant version for HD-DVD.
