Ok, this might be a little confusing, but stay with me…

I am cutting a feature film that has been shot on the HVX200. All my raw media is DVCPRO HD 720 24p. There are a lot of effects shot involed that some CGI people are working on.

He comes the issue… They want me to convert the shots to uncompressed 10 bit 1080 24p HD for them to work on. Then they return the shots to me with all CGI and composting and video included, in uncompressed 10 bit 1080 24p HD.

Wouldn’t it be easier for them to do the work, give me just the effects shots with an alpha channel that I can place over my video in the timeline, foregoing any compression on the video?

Can anyone shed some light on this?

I wouldn’t be terribly concerned about it personally. If their work can be created with an alpha channel and just composited over the original, then go for it, if not then just do what they ask. I don’t think you’ll notice the difference down the line.

If your native format is 720, you should stay at 720. Although there’s nothing wrong with them asking for 10-bit UC. And they should be able to deliver back to you as 720. To have to scale the video up for compositing, and then back down afterwards is an unnecessary step, and could introduce artefacting if it’s not done properly.

If you were mixing 1080 & 720, that might be another matter, especially if the final conform were at 1080, but that’s not the case here.
