New to HD editing. Have recently completed a few projects for school and I want to determine if I’m getting the best quality. I used the DNxHD 175 and was reading an article in post magazine speaking of DNxHD 36. How do these compare to each other and how do they compare to DVCProHD.

I began editing with AMA Volumes and then transcoded because my system was running slow. If I re-transcode to a better option is it pulling from the original files or is it manipulating the current file. I’d like to have the best resolution for my reel.

    Please advise.

DNxHD36 is an OFFLINE editing codec. Meaning not full quality. It is low quality so that you can store lots of footage on little space…edit…then recapture/import at a higher resolution, like DNxHD 175 or 220.

DVCPRO HD is the native codec of the Panasonic line of cameras. It is really only used when dealing with them. But it is a full resolution codec, not low res like DNxHD36. But not full raster like 175.

Transcoding is always a good way to make sure things run smoothly. If you want full quality, then you need to look at DNxHD175. Again, 36 is an offline codec.

Shane, DNxHD was recommended to me as a good way to move high-quality hi-def footage from FCP to Sony Vegas/DVD Arch. We downloaded the Avid QT codecs (LE 2.3), but how do we get these programs to recognize DNxHD as a rendering format? Is there some import function in FCP? Vegas?
Thanks for any assistance you can provide.
