    Hi all,

Hopefully someone has come across this and can help me out. I’m using a Sony HD camera and am capturing some video via Firewire into FCP 5.0.

The raw footage is of a martial arts demonstration, so there are lots of short clips that I’m capturing. The problem is that FCP is capturing each short segment as an individual clip, rather than a contiguous whole. I’d like the 30 minute video to end up in one clips, rather than the 17 it is now.

With my other DV cam, it would capture all the video into a single clip, which I would then go in and edit. Right now, I’d need to go in and join all clips together manually. I’d like to avoid having to do this.

I checked out different settings, but didn’t see anything that causes the capture behavior.

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

    Thanks,

    Rob

HDV breaks up the clips where the camera stops/starts (when you stopped recording). There is no way around this.

Not sure if this is the same in FCP 5, but I’ve got FCP 5.1 and I can choose whether I capture individual clips or one complete clip from my Sony HC1. The switch is under Log & Capture … Clip Settings. Just uncheck Create new clip on Start/Stop. Hope this helps.

You can’t tell it to ignore timecode breaks? that’s surprising.

Just know that this will make it harder to ever re-cut the project in the future. If this is a one time project, then it won’t matter.

Most editors prefer to have the 17 clips rather than one long 30 minute file. Makes it much easier to pull scenes if you have shorter clips than a long one.

Switch to “Non-Controllable Device”. Hit Play on the camera and then Capture Now in FCP. This will mean you will have NO timecode, but you’ll get one continuous clip.

Only if you capture without timecode…and since I can’t ever think of a reason why I’d ever do that, I keep forgetting that others may not care about that so I don’t make the suggestion. But yeah, with HDV if you want timecode, it breaks up the clips.

You’re better off with short clips. That way, you can organize them, make log notes, circle takes, etc. You know, editor-ish kinda stuff. 🙂
