HD and Vegas
I’m about to do my first HD project with a borrowed Sony HDV camera. I’m wondering if anyone can point me to a good primer or other basic article about getting started with HD.
I decided I needed to use HD because I want to emulate an editing technique I saw on a recent PBS science pilot called “22 Century.” Maybe some of you caught it – it was a free video podcast download from iTunes. Anyway, it uses an edgy, jumpy editing technique where the person is chromakeyed and is in front of a changing video background. The unusual part is that the person is moved around quickly with zooms and jumps edits. At first it looks weird, but it’s actually perfect for a short project I need to do. The reason for HD is that you need to use pan/crop to move from a 3/4 body shot to a close up of the face, using the same shot, and it seems to me that miniDV just doesn’t have the resolution to allow for that. I did a quick and dirty “proof of concept” using an HD camera and it seems to work well for this purpose.
If anyone has any ideas or advice, I would welcome it.

I think you are on the right track.
HD does have limits as far as zoom, so keep your eye on the pixel demensions while you are adjusting pan/crop so you don’t go smaller than SD resolution without realizing it.Gary Kleiner
