HD 4:3 Pillar Box
Posted by Ronnie Brazeal on February 2, 2009 at 9:23 pmI am working on a film and they have requested an HD version with a 4:3 Pillar Box. Has anyone had any experience with this. My intention is to just lay a black layer over the left and right side of the screen but I have no formula to go by to know that it is exactly 4:3. Any suggestions. Thanks.

February 2, 2009 at 9:30 pmWhat is the original? Is it widescreen HD or is it 4×3 SD?

February 2, 2009 at 9:48 pmIt is a 1920 x 1080 23.98psf HD project going to HDCAM SR at 1920 x 1080 23.98psf but with a 4:3 pillar box. Thanks.

February 2, 2009 at 9:53 pmThis is a VERY odd request, IMHO. I have never ever heard of anyone asking for HD pillarbox masters. I do know of a company that took an SD project they had and blew it up to HD, but they wanted to keep their entire 4:3 frame so they made a pillarbox master. But when they shopped it around, then sold it, the company that bought it didn’t want the pillarbox, they wanted full 16:9…so that film then had to have the top and bottom cropped to fit into that frame.
SInce you have a full HD master that is already 16:9, I find it VERY odd that you are asked to deliver an HD master that is pillarboxed. What purpose could this POSSIBLY serve? SO they can make SD masters from this and already see the framing? Why don’t they ask for an SD master?
Sorry, shaken by the odd request. The client is obviously unclear about somthing.

February 2, 2009 at 9:55 pmAre you sure they don’t mean letterboxed?
Video with a 16×9 aspect ratio is not pillarboxed when dropped into a 4×3 frame, it’s letterboxed, with bars on top and bottom.

It’s odd but comes up once in awhile.
for me, a 4×3 HD pillarbox is the only proper way to deliver
16mm film shot in 4×3 and put on on blu-ray disc. Also the HD Star Trek Remastered is pillar box 4×3 HD.

“Yeah, but that’s 4×3 in an HD frame, his stuff is HD to begin with.

February 2, 2009 at 11:29 pmThey are asking for a 4:3 (Pillar Box) panned and scanned HDCam SR master. Not sure why but it’s on the deliverables list. Sounds like it’s not common so my option is to match the crop that my card does on the downconvert. Thanks.

February 3, 2009 at 8:02 amI’ve seen that request on deliverable lists from several different international distributors the past few years. It’s not unusual for them to want a pan & scan HD master for downconverting their own 4:3 full-frame standard definition for either PAL or NTSC broadcast or full-frame DVD release. Many standard definition broadcasters still won’t accept letterbox as well.
