My client gave me an HD 23.976 QT and needs an SD 29.97 beta SP output. I created a 23.976 HD project and sequence. So, if I hook up a Beta SP to the system, I’ll be able to select the options in the digital cut window and output? What options should I choose? Is there a speed up version? I don’t think he wants that on the NTSC output. However, he also wants a PAL Beta SP version (with speed up) as well. Can I do this if I have the decks? Right now, he is expecting to take my SD NTSC Beta SP and go to a dub house to make the PAL version. Is this necessary?

Frame accurate digital cut and deck control for SD formats needs to be done from an SD project. If you are trying to output NTSC 23.976 with 2:3 pulldown (no speed up) and a PAL 25fps (4.1% speed up) I might suggest you import the QT directly in a NTSC 23.976 project to start then output to both formats from there as needed.

You can do the HD step first, but you will most likely end up transcoding to NTSC 23.976 anyway to make the outputs since you cannot do SD deck control from an HD project.

    Michael,

Do you not recommend using Universal Mastering for some reason? This method (1080/23.976 -> 30i NTSC) has worked pretty flawlessly for me using Symphony for at least a year. Digital Cut options offer downconvert and as long as you supply the deck and the Nitris DX with the same SD ref, everything is peachy, no transcoding necessary. As I understand it, the hardware is doing the pulldown insertion and downconversion.

    OK – half apologies as I think I am half wrong… 😉

HD to SD works as a downconvert from 23.976 to NTSC and adds 2:3 pulldown. I believe you still cannot:

    – Insert edit a segment somewhere in the sequence and preserve original 2:3 pulldown.
    – Change pulldown cadence of first frame of edit
    – Create a PAL 25fos version from the HD 1080p/23.976.

So if you need any of the above, and only need SD outputs from the HD QT, I suggested going to NTSC 23.96 directly so you have those features available.

OK cool – thanks for the clarification. My bad for not seeing the OP’s bit about PAL. I think I’ve been able to do inserts but I’ve always kept them to the AA frame (00, 05, 10, 15, 20, 25) so the pulldown stays consistent. I believe the Nitris DX is adding pulldown post-sequence on a global level, so it isn’t clip-to-clip. I could definitely be wrong about it though… 🙂
