I’m somewhat new to FCP and am having a little bit of trouble. When I capture footage from my camera, and edit pieces together, I notice that some of the edges of a figure are pixelated or just not very defined. I’m having the same problem with text that I’m importing from after effects. I export it with lossless compression but when I import it, I can notice that the edges are pixelated. Anyone know why this is? Thanks.

Sounds like you might be using DV as your sequence preset. If you have the capability, using an uncompressed sequence setting should help tremendously.

    And…

Shane’s Stock Answer #2: Blurry playback

ONLY JUDGE THE QUALITY OF YOUR MATERIAL ON AN EXTERNAL NTSC MONITOR, OR AT LEAST A TV.

    1. Disable overlays on the canvas
    2. Make sure you’ve rendered everything (no green bars at the top of the timeline

Video playback requires large amounts of data and many computations. In order to maintain frame rate and be viewable at a normal size, only about one-fourth of the DV data is used in displaying the movie to the screen. However, the DV footage is still at full quality, and is best viewed thru a TV or NTSC monitor routed thru your camera or deck.

How are you monitoring, with a computer monitor or a video monitor?

I am using a tv monitor. The footage looks better on that than the computer screen. But I still get rough edges at times, especially if I’m using keyframes to create motion in an imported still image. I get a rough motion path than a smooth one.

I have run into this as well. I did find a way to fix it, but I kinda forgot what I did. I noticed that my images would be come pixelated around the boarders when use effects like ‘Basic 3D’. I used the Anti aliasing effect and Color Correction. I believe I moved the Color Correction under the Basic 3D and it fixed the problem. So maybe if your using effects, try moving them around.

If this is not the case, go to the Sequence preferences -> Video Processing ->Motion Picture Quality, and make the motion rendering at best. This is not a default setting because it takes awhile to render, but it does help somewhat.

Also make sure that the resolution setting in the render panel is set to 100%.
