  • Having to Re-Link Files After Import

Posted by Mike Vannelli on October 26, 2018 at 7:11 pm

    Hi,

For some reason, on one of our iMacs (we have few at our studio), every time I import a video file (one file) it will “import” but then will show a black thumbnail and will not playback or even seem like it is there. Or, when I import multiple video files, it will correctly import a few but then do the black thumbnail for the rest (see attached screenshot). The only way to correct this is to re-link the files, then they work fine, but I am having to do this every time! Same thing with audio files. I will try and import them, this time they do show a waveform in their thumbnail, but when I try to play them back, nothing. Again, I have to re-link to be able to work with them, then it works fine.

This is such a pain to have to do every time. Does anyone have any suggestions? I am only importing the original media and am not converting to Optimized or Proxy. I am running FCPX on a 2017 iMac, so I know it isn’t a compatibility issue. I also tried trashing the preferences. The only thing I haven’t done is delete and re-install FCPX, which I have a feeling won’t work.

    Thanks!

If you hit “Reveal in Finder” on one of those clips, where does it take you?

I can’t really help with the why, but it’s been a recurring bug that’s affected a select few over the years. According to Apple, it was fixed in FCPX 10.4. Up until then, the best solution was to re-link the footage after import.

I suspect it’s a combination of FCPX and macOS not working together properly.

Just checking that all the IMacs are running the latest version of FCPX on High Sierra?

    Hi,

I am running the latest version of FXPX (10.4.3) and just updated to Mojave (hoping that would fix the problem since it was still doing it on High Sierra).

    Thanks!

    Hi,

When I do “Reveal In Finder” it takes me to the correct file I just imported….

    Thanks!

I’m asking if the thumbnail is blank, and you reveal in Finder, where does it take you?

If it takes you to an alias file, trash that file, and reimport.

It’s still a bug in 10.4.3 and High Sierra…well for me anyway.
The worse is when you have multiple libraries on different volumes and you decide to open an older on to check on some references.
The most recent library tends to lose all its links so I’m faced with having to relink all files again for the thousand times.
This all started to happen when I started using the Consolidate option.
