November 6, 2008 at 7:56 pmNo, no reference hooked up to the Beta when i played it back to the monitor. With just the Beta hooked to the monitor, i checked a few different tapes and didn’t get any black bars popping in during random test playbacks. How does a bad tape cause this issue?

It could have been recorded that way.
Ok, so let me get this straight, you only find the black bar when you are hooked up to the AJA box? WHen you have reference hooked up properly, the black bar comes in and out across multiple tapes?

November 6, 2008 at 9:39 pmI saw the black bar while testing through the AJA, as well as only coming out of the Beta to the monitor. And ran these tests with the same tape. Then i tried using a few different tapes in both test modes, and i didn’t get any black bars at all with the other tapes. So it seems maybe i’ve been working with some funky tapes. Thats why i was wondering how a tape could be giving me bad sync.

You can record bad sync to tape, or maybe the deck that used to record these tapes needed some servicing. It’s possible. Sounds like we narrowed it down a but for you, though.
Are the tapes all from the same source?

November 6, 2008 at 9:57 pmYou know what, i was just realizing that the tapes i’ve been having issues with have all been output from an old Avid. Funny thing is though that the black bars may appear over one part of the tape, then might not appear if i rewind and play back over the same part. If that makes sense.

November 6, 2008 at 10:04 pmYou’re starting to lose me here, Mike. Any chance you can post a screen grab of what it looks like?

November 6, 2008 at 10:35 pmOk here we go. The first pic shows a section of video i played down. At the bottom of the frame is the thick black line. I rewound to the beginning and played it down again. The black line appeared again,as shown in pic two, but was thinner than in pic one. And it’s definitely only happening with footage that was output from our Avid. Also, if this is an issue i’m looking into too much let me know. It’ll help me from going crazy.

November 6, 2008 at 10:48 pmThat doesn’t look like a sync problem to me, really. it looks more like analog tape that’s out of the overscan area. If you need to put them on the web raster to raster, it will be up to you to crop all that mess out.

November 7, 2008 at 3:52 pmIs there a possibility that the Avid is outputting something onto the tape thats causing the frame to shift around when i play it back on my deck?

OK it was said before that This is called OVERSCAN and it is completely normal
it is common since the raw frame size is 720 x 486 and the avid would have laid that down to tape correctly
working with FW formats you never see this.
