  • Has Vegas gotten slower and slower as time goes on?

I recently got hired to produce a video. It’s been a while since I broke out the old Vegas. I used to be working on a Quad Core setup with DDR2 RAM and a GTX 260 back before for reference.

I purchased a upgrade for Vegas 12, and installed it on my new machine. It’s a I5 quad core 9300k i5 3570 with a Hd 750. I’m stuck 4gbs of ddr3 unfortunately since one of the slots on my motherboard won’t read ram and I’m too lazy to replace the entire thing for now. Nonetheless I started editing initially it was fine. But start using some Chroma Key filters or some Magic Bullet on 720p and the preview starts to lag quite a bit and you’d have to bring down the preview quality considerably to be able to get the preview to run at anything approaching a decent framerate. We weren’t exactly dealing with a lot of data here. It was a 5 minute video and the codec used in the originals was not high bit rate. So I was seriously doubting it was a RAM thing.

In fact I’ve done a lot of After Effects work on this machine prior to using Vegas and it ran smoother and was a lot more responsive.

Vegas was quite buggy, freezing and crashing as it always has. Put on the wrong filter and program it wrong? Hope you don’t want to render that because it certainly won’t play without crashing.

I guess I really should go over to Premiere, but I despise the interface. I really have no idea as to why this thing is putting up so much resistance while my other tools do not. Any ideas?

I have the same Intel CPU as you, except mine is the ‘k’ variant (which only means it’s unlocked for overclocking, which I do not do). My Vegas Pro 12 works awesome on my system. I do have more RAM (16gb), and feel that this may be your problem.

Check your event viewer after a crash and see what reports are being generated. My previous version of Vegas Pro used to crash regularly when I started editing AVCHD files on my old laptop (Intel i3 CPU). This laptop had 4gb of RAM. After updating the laptop to 8gb of RAM, Vegas ran much smoother and never crashed once.

I’m not saying that RAM is definitely your issue, but I think you’re making a mistake by saying that RAM isn’t causing your problems.

Dave is right, 4GB is too little for ANYTHING on Win7.

Wesley, install Process Explorer and have a look at system resources. Turn on ALL the systray icons. That way you wont have to guess.

8GB of memory and up is the best option!
