Has anyone used DialNorm with Avid Symphony Nitris?
Our postmixers in LA have been using this,and the audio levels,while MUCH lower overall than what we’re used to, often appear to sound compressed (though the levels now are MUCH more even overall).
So…sometime soon,our editors will be using Dialnorm (“Dialogue-Normal”) with our Avid Symphony Nitris DXs (our master control suites already use it).
Any hints as to how it works? How WELL it works? How much time it will add to our longform outputs? Etc Etc…

My personal opinion is it’s quicker and easier to run your output through a compressor. It works fine… and the same way as a software comressor, really. You just apply it, set your attributes and render. That’s my beef with it. Needless precomputes… especially if doing longform.

Interesting…thanks. Management has informed us we WILL be using DN in edit for outputs soon…and we do a LOT of 2-hour outputs (HD and SD).
I’ve heard it adds more than real-time hours to output sessions…but noone has confirmed this yet. Has anyone here used DN with Avid during outputting?

well yeah. Like I said, needless precomputes and added time in the seat. Wondering why management wants to mandate such a wacky thing. Should they be the ones pushing the buttons if wanting to be so hands on? To add hours to projects in the name of billing only is suicide waiting to happen, imo.

Well,it’s been a couple of years,and between my company merging and moving facilities twice, the Dialnorm has been put off (at least for me) until now.
ONce again, in a short time,our staff editors are going to be tasked with using Dialnorm WITH our PC/Win7/Avid Symphonys during all outputs…whether shortform or longform.
Management is aware of the extra time this will take,but are forging ahead with this plan anyway. We haven’t seen which particular equipment we will be using yet. I assume there will be the usual minimum amount of training.
I cannot find ONE tutorial online that explains using Dialnorm along with Avid. Any hints for my particular situation? Any links?
