  • Has anyone successfully “media managed” a project?

I’ve wanted to archive a project the same way I had in FCP 7 which is: backup the raw content, media manage (and backup) the final edit, sound, non-shot files, XMLs and EDls. I’ve tried these methods https://www.rippletraining.com/managing-fcp-x-events-projects-with-disk-images.html

    https://www.premiumbeat.com/blog/how-to-archive-projects-in-final-cut-pro-x/method
    to no avail.

    The goal:
Archive exclusively to disk image only the media needed to rebuild the final edit. (I already backup the raw camera content to two hard drives as I get them)

    The hurdles:
    – Duplicate project + used media gives the entire source media used in an edit not the portion used in the edit.

    – I don’t have a way of knowing how large the project is and thus how big to make the disk image. Oddly, sometime I’ll make the disk image (sparse bundle) incredibly large and I still can’t move the project to the disk image. My thinking is that the project should be somewhere around the size of the output Quicktime at sequence settings.

    – I don’t have the luxury of backing up all of the transcoded media all of the time, hence the method used above.

How are you all archiving only what you need?

I don’t know of a way to do that.

Just look at the size of the Event folder associated with the project and the Project folder itself and you’ll see how big the disk image needs to be. Sometimes the render files can be huge. You can delete those before you move the project if need be.

    Here’s something you might try:

First, copy your project to a different drive, without copying the event files (project only). Next, select your newly copied project, go to the file menu and select “consolidate media”. This will give you the option to create a new event with only the media used.

    Hope that helps.

Will this copy only the portion of the clip that is used or the entire clip? I think the answer to this is key in answering the question.

I tried the above method and it gave me the whole clip, but I’d like to try it again with a different project and something simple – like one 30 minute clip, edit 10 seconds and see if I just get those pieces.

I am really amazed that there’s no media management similar to FCP7.
