Has anyone seen this?
I have FCP 5.1.2 and MacOS 10.4.8. I am digitizing DVCPRO HD from XDCAM HD (I know… that’s another story) but while I am digitizing thru my Kona 3 (version 3.2 software), sometimes my clips loose their timecode or just get shortened clips. This is getting rather annoying that I have to baby sit my computer to make sure that the clips are correct.
This just started yesterday…. I am pulling my hair out!

Are you changing the frame rate in any way? This sounds like when you capture 60fps Varicam material at 24fps to slow it down, the clips will be much shorter than you think they are.

Check if your media is drop or non drop and then match your capture settings to do so. I had a huge problem a week or two ago where I was capturing non drop but the tc was a mixture of drop and non drop. It was a massive headache to figure out which was drop/non drop (that tc would start over 5-6 times PER TAPE!). I had the same issues where the tc would disappear along with reel number and other metadata. once I captured everything, all metadata held properly.

No… no frame rate changes at all. Its all 29.97 video.

No… the footage is continuous timecode and all drop frame. Most of the time it works but sometimes it doesn’t. It boggles my mind.

And your capture preset is set to drop frame?

I think I may have found the problem. I trashed my preferences for a second time and all seems well…. But that makes me curious as to what is going on if I had to trash my preferences twice to remove the wierdness. Hmmmmm…..

There is no such thing as a drop or non-drop frame capture preset. It simply reads the timecode and captures whatever you shot.

So riddle me this? Why is there a Firewire NTSC and a firewire NDF device control preset?
Believe me man. I was banging my head against the wall trying to figure out why the hell my clips were losing their metadata. It had to do with drop/nondrop. If I didn’t have the device control matched, i could not capture properly.
I guess with RS-422 this doesn’t matter.
