has anyone heard of the “After Effects On the Spot” line of books…I just saw 3 of them on the CMP Books site and was wondering what, if anything, can any of you tell me about them. Please direct me to any reviews that have been writtten about them. At this point I am comparing everything I read to Trish & Chris Meyer.

Also I now that After Effects runs on javascript, however, there are tons of books on java out there; which one is the best or atleast better than the rest?

Well, the “On the Spot” books are a bit primitive from my POV (telling from the one I had in hand here at my local international book shop) – if you read the manual carefully and have searched the web for certain questions including the forums here at the COW I don’t see any reason to get them. You won’t learn much from them. It’s really merely a loose collection of tips and tricks. As for JavaScript – that really depends on what you are trying to do. All of them explain the basic principles and syntax well enough, but most of them focus on web design, databases, sevlets, Flash integration and that sort of things. The best books are from O’Reilly and Addison Wellesley but they are also the most expensive ones.

The “On the Spot” books aren’t meant to be the reference books that Trish & Chris’ books have become. As Mylenium states, they’re meant to be a collection of tips and tricks. Perhaps to be kept on the shelf next to the Meyer’s book just for a little quick look now and then.

We have a review in the library:
