hardware/software upgrade to improve rendering time and work load
After posting a question about editing HD I have come up with a lot more questions for concerning my SD workflow.
Right now I have a dual Xeon 3.0 XP system with 2GB of RAM. I ingest via firewire and a DSR-45. This setup works great for most of my work until I start getting crazy with effects. On some of the bigger and more effects heavy work I do like green screen and 3D in After Effects, the system tends to bog down. Rendering can take forever and sometimes Premiere just quits rendering on its own. I then have to render small sections one at a time to get it done.
I want to improve this but I am really confused about what exactly some of the hardware and/or software options will do for me. I have a friend with a similar setup who just loves his Matrox RTX100. Is that what I need? I’m not really looking for more ways to capture video as my DSR-45 lets me pass through any analog video I have, I just want better performance on the timeline and the ability to do more in realtime. I think that is what the Matrox would give me, but I’m not sure.
What about Aspect HD? Will that boost performance? If not, what exactly does it do? Would it allow me to edit HD assuming I can get the video ingested? If I were to go to another editor who has an HD deck and digitize all the video from tape and put it on a hard drive, would I then be able to dump that into my system and edit it?
Again, I’m not really looking for an HD solution, I just want to make my SD workflow more efficient and I just don’t know what I need in order to make that happen.
Wow, that’s a lot of questions! I really appreciate all the people on here with so much knowledge. I’ll try to become a little more knowledgable myself so I can contribute more in the future! Until then, thanks for your help!
