    Hi,

I’m wondering about the hardware configurations:

    – to grade DNXHD material? (120 or 185)
    – DNXHD material in Stereo 3D?

Is a 2008 8-core Mac Pro with an old quadro fx enough? What does the quadro fx bring compared to the original 8800 GT?

Stepping up, what would be the minimum hardware config for RED Epic Stereo3D at reasonable compression, non-premium dual, half-rez realtime output? I have a software two-drive RAID0 for the main data disk, and an old quadro FX. Is this hugely underpowered or usable for lower-quality stuff?

Would one, or two, redrocket card(s) be enough or would I require bigger GPUs/hardware RAID?

    Thanks
    David

sorry, I meant “non premium debayering”

I advice you to read through the configuration guide at BMDs website.

The Mac Pro you’re suggesting isn’t quite enough, but it’ll probably do for HD. Any higher than that, and you’re better off with a Mac Pro from 2009 or 2010, be it 8-core or 12-core.

I’m not sure the graphics cards you suggest will do much magic. GT120 or an ATI card will be your GUI card. The card you connect your PC monitor to. The GT8800 might do the job too, I dunno. It’s not officially supported anyway.

As for video processing, I’d without a doubt stick to whatever the configuration guide says. Either a Quadro or a GTX285 (if you can find one, they’re EOL), or a GTX480 for Mac from eBay.

I’d either have a 4-HDD RAID0 internally (with external RAID for backup) or an external RAID with 4 HDDs or more for both speed and security.

I think you way under powered there..

You will need two red rockets at least to playback stereo epic in HD, (3 rockets for full rez 3D)
You will also need at least 2 GPU processing cards and your macpro won’t hold all these cards at one time, so you’ll need an expansion chassis,

    1 GUI
    2 GPU
    2 RED ROCKETS
    1 Decklink Extreme 3D
    1 Storage NAS, SAN connection…

Your going to struggle with anything less..

A good alternative is to get a PC with tons of PCI slots. That’s what I’m opting for in the future. Too bad I hate Windows for anything except games.

    thanks for the answers

I won’t even try the redcode path, but I’ll test the hardware to grade a EX-3 XDCAM-EX 3D project in Resolve on a thunderbolt Macbook (2011) and post my results here
