Hardware advice
Posted by David Loschiavo on September 28, 2005 at 12:06 pmI am a beginning to spec out a new machine for video editing and could use any feedback or alternate selections anyone has. My goal is to eliminate any rendering time. My current machine will render a “Shine” enhanced credit roll for an hour. Any use of a video effect will result in a long render as well
I am new to the HW for RT editing, I have concerns over PPro compatability issues that I have read about on these forums.PPro 1.5
Win XP 64
ASUS ALN-E Mobo
AMD 3200+ processor
2gb Ram
2 160 gb SATA II (raid configured?)
Matrox RT xt.10 (or is there a Canopus product substitute?Does any of this HW come with transitions or effects included?)Thanks in advance

September 28, 2005 at 3:14 pmIs Matrox Axio SD a possibility for you, UNBELIEVEABLE amount of real time with SD & HD footage, you can edit both SD & HD material on an SD system.
http://www.matrox.com for more info
Just a suggestion, I use it myself with PPro

September 28, 2005 at 11:42 pmYour spec’d out system looks good. I was told by the Avid people that having a RAID configuration (the one that splits the streams to two HDs)is an unnecessary risk of instability. They said that today’s ATA Ultra 100, 7200 RPM drives are very stable and fast enough for anything you’d want to do. They discouraged editors from using RAID. …unless you use the RAID configuration that gives you a mirror image on another drive for backup purposes.

September 29, 2005 at 1:07 pmThe Axio would be ideal, but I’m guessing since you listed the RTX10 that the axio is out of your price range. I have to respectfully disagree that you don’t need raid for video editing. You can get away with not using it, but I’ve been using Raid 0 on 4 160s for the last 2 years. I’ve noticed that when my drives fill up (and also slow down) that premiere is more likely to crash. I also have the RTX100. Make sure that you check with the recommended and tested chipsets before you buy. (https://matrox.com/video/support/rtx100xtremepro/rec/chipsets.cfm) I’d be weary about using AMD for and RTX system because the RTX, despite the fact that I love mine, has a lot of compatability issues. It is so picky that just by moving a sound card to a different slot can cause instability. Again, I love mine and it has been great. Real Time cards do come with RT effects, but beware, the RTX line of cards isn’t going to make shine Real Time. Another solution would be to just buy a faster system, with more processing power. I’m upgrading in a few months, so I might be selling my RTX100, but just so you know, it doesn’t do HDV. I’ve used it mainly for wedding’s and legal videos. It is perfect for both. Good Luck.

September 29, 2005 at 2:26 pmThanks for all of the advice, Axio is out of my price range. I am only a serious hobbyist right now.
I would be interested in the rtx100 if it is for sale in the near future. I need some time to figure out the whole system, so my timeline is probably 6 – 8 weeks.

October 8, 2005 at 3:05 pmI see that you are doing a bunch of road shows and other things for Matrox. You are being paid by Matrox, aren’t you?
I ask because your signature is misleading as it tries to mislead readers into thinking you are a user who just happens to like Matrox, when you are on their payroll.

October 8, 2005 at 11:58 pmI am a user who happens to like this product enough to have bought it. I am hired by Matrox on a freelance basis to demonstrate this product that I use to do my normal post work. My owning it and demonstrating it does not make it any less of a viable solution. I get no commission from sales and am paid by the day for the demo work I do. If you’d like more background info on me feel free to check out my bio on the Discrete Edit COW forum. I have been a member here for quite a while.
