Here is a question regarding harddrive set-up. Would an okay harddrive configuration look like this?

C Drive (separate physical drive): applications/software, for example Vegas

D Drive (separate physical drive): clips/captured files/clips that you are editing/jpegs/wavs files etc

E Drive (external eSata/USB2.0/Firwire 400 drive) to render your project into (can this be external, if so how fast do write times need to be?)

Or, is it okay to render to the same physical drive as your project/source files, in this case the ‘D Drive’?

Question: In rendering how much data per second is Vegas processing? I know this will vary from computer to computer but could we render to an external drive, what write speeds are needed?

    Thanks.

The specifications you have outlined above is
an okay harddrive configuration…As you have put it.
Except your C Drive that should contain the installed
softwares needed is best not to be external.

    But i wouldn’t suggest a USB2.0 Drive…Firewire is better.
And yes, your E drive can be external.

Thanks Steve. Yes, Vegas is very definitely on the ‘C Drive’ internal main drive. My main point is whether it’s healthier for the rendering files to be sent to a drive separate from the ‘D Drive’ which contains project/source files; to stop thrashing. What do you think?

    Vegas on C Drive (internal)

Project/Source files on D Drive (internal)

    Render to external eSata drive

Thanks for your help, and I hope this help someone else out too!

    Paul.

I dont know about healthier…but rendering to a drive
separate from your D drive is perfectly ok.
You are good to go with the new specs you just mention.

    Hi Paul
If I could put in my 2¢ worth. Basically your good-to-go however, I wouldn’t render to an external drive. Also eSATA is much better than FW. I have an HP Editing computer and a MAC Book Pro Laptop. Both have SATA internals. My MBC also has a LaCie external 500gb, soon to be expanded to 1T. That drive has USB/FW400-800 & eSATA. I found that the eSATA is much better and USB isn’t even in the running for video work.

I have 3 internal drives in my HP. C is system files and software. Next is a general storage/working (photos and stuff) and the 3rd is my scratch disk. I capture to it as well as render to it and never had any problems. Only time I had problems was trying to render to an external FW drive.

On my MBP my external eSATA LaCie is my scratch disk but I haven’t rendered anything from Final Cut yet as I just recently got it. All my video files are on that LaCie and I don’t have any problems with the timeline in FCE, either playback or editing.

Use your externals for storage. That’s what I do. I finish a project and until the client signs off on it I store the video files on the externals.
