You may or may not have read my posts last week about an FCP project file not opening. Some advice gleaned at this forum led me to the knowledge that this problem stemmed from a corrupt media file.

Well, I deducted that I could transfer all of the media to another hard drive and reconnect the project there and all is well (except for the fact that it’s a usb2 drive and will never be fast enough for editing purposes).

The firewire drive that I’ve been using has some mileage on it. Countless amounts of data and files have been shifted around, deleted, put back, and etc. And this hard drive has been employed at my place of business longer than I have. Plus a file went corrupt and it started behaving improperly. So, I decided to put EVERYTHING of importance from that hard drive onto my other hard drive and reformat the old guy.

I noticed some funny behavior yesterday that I had hoped/thought disappeared magically today. Well, it’s back. What’s happening is that when I scroll down to look at the contents of the old hard drive quickly, all of my finder windows close and the desktop refreshes. The same thing was happening yesterday when I tried to open a file on the old hard drive. That was what led me to finally reformat it. Also, I tried to erase with zeros and that failed after two hours of trying, saying something to the effect that the partition could not be overwritten. So, is this hard drive dead?

The hard drive in question is a 180gb western digital.

    Thanks in advance.

With hard drives as inexpensive as they are now,
I’d just buy a newer bigger faster one.

I totally respect your efforts to keep this drive on life support, but I would pull the plug. There’s no reason to risk losing any more time, effort, and perhaps most importantly data.

I’ve had this sort of thing. Sounds like a physical problem with the drive. Been there. No software could find the problem, and reformatting, etc. didn’t fix it.

Run some utilities on your whole system and if it persists, (or if you’re already convinced) get a new drive.

Best advice is to replace the drive. A Western Digital drive are the types they sell in Best Buy, Circuit City, etc… and are good for backup storage, but not for day to day A/V editing.

LaCie or G-RAID’s are much better for that.

What brand of drive is in a LaCie? I thought LaCie was essentially just the enclosure and controller.

I don’t know, just ask them. You can purchase Western Digital Firewire enclosures just like LaCie’s so that’s what I was referring to. I would never use those for day to day A/V work.

Thanks for the responses. I just got back from the computer store where I bought another hard drive. I’m going internal this time around, with a 300gb drive (another western digital- feel free to ignore me when I post with problems with this one, Walter. I just read your post when I got back, but I’ve had success with WD drives at home and the office. The problem drive that started this thread has been at work for years).

Could someone please point me in the direction of a reliable ultra ata/100 card?
