Great, thanks, I guess Western D always comes up high in everyone’s list – should I go for internal or external or does it really matter, speed, etc?

    Thanks

internal is faster and cheaper…. in the 500GB range, I’d actually suggest the WD6400AAKS it is a 640GB Western Digital drive and it’s one of the fastest SATA drives you can get (and it still runs fairly cool). It’s $85 at newegg right now.

Very good help – now why is 640 GB good and why is it so cheap if it’s a good one, just curious…

    Thanks

    Kent,

Perhaps you haven’t been paying much attention, but very good 1Tb drives are available for just $180.

For the record, all of the latst crop of SATA drives are good. I prefer Hitachi, the other guy prefers WD. SATA drives just happen to be very robust, very fast, and very cheap. Good for us…

The 640 is very good because it uses 2 high-density platters rather than 3-4 low density platters. This reduces heat and increases speed.

I agree that 1TB drives are the way to go (I suggested the 640 since it was closer to what you were asking about). Of the 1TB drives, I really like the Samsung F1 drive since it also uses high-density platters (I believe it’s the only 3-platter 1TB drive) and you can pick it up for $150.

I have a WD 640 as my system drive and multiple Samsung F1 drives for media in my Mac Pro. Both drives are great.

While we’re on the subject of hard drives…

Having read this thread I’m getting the impression that you’re much better off buying a hard drive separately, rather than from an Apple dealer. I’m assuming that not all hard drives work on Macs, so how can one tell which ones do (aside from when it’s made clear on the box etc)?
