Hard Drive Space
Posted by Tom Amici on February 13, 2008 at 10:14 pmHi Guys,
How much drive space would I need for an hour long uncompressed video coming from SONY HDCam.
I’m currently using FCP Studio 2.

February 13, 2008 at 10:39 pmDepends on the bit rate. You can DL a widget called video space that will calculate storage for you.

February 13, 2008 at 11:06 pmThanks but I keep hearing the rule of thumb is a TB an Hour. The widget I got deals with uncompressed not specifically Sony HDCAm.

February 14, 2008 at 12:34 amHDCAM is an 8 bit 3:1:1 DCT compressed format, topping out at about 140MB/s which translates to about 500GB/hr. Your storage depends on the codec you choose to didge the media. You can didge as dv or 4:4:4 uncompressed. For HDCAM 8bit uncompressed surpasses the quality on tape. Or you could also just as easily use ProRes HQ and still keep up with HDCAM.

Only if you are using HDCAM SR or didging with ridiculously high codec.

Then you’re using the wrong widget! The videospace widget has just about every codec imaginable. It’s a great tool and I use it frequently.
