  • Hard drive question… better to have OS & Premiere on SSD? Or Video files on SSD?

    Hey everyone..

just curious.. what would be a better set-up.. to have Windows 7 & Premiere cs5.5.2 on a mSata SSD and my video files on a 7200rpm HD? Or have the OS & Premiere on the SSD, and my video files on the 7200rpm HD?

    thanks & Happy 4th 🙂

    Premiere and OS on SSD.

What kind of video footage are you editing? Are you using heavy Multi camera? Even a standard 7200 RPM drive can handle 1-2 streams of RED 4K footage. If you’re, say, using DPX or some other finishing format then you should step it up and look into a RAID system to improve the speed of standard hard disks.

Don’t bother with SSD for video storage, far too expensive.

The new 960GB Crucial drives are actually very affordable compared to what previous SSD drives have released at. I have a client’s system that is getting upgraded with 4 of them in raid 5 benching at 1.8GB/s to 3GB/s depending on the size of files used. That is far cheaper than a large mechanical SAS array that would give the same speed.
