Handheld Shaky Camera plus Green Screen?
Posted by Dan Oster on March 17, 2009 at 1:40 amHi. I’m attempting to shoot a Battlestar Galactica style green screen piece with loads of camera movement and quick zooms as is used in the show. Is there a way with After Effects to lock down my background so it doesn’t move with the camera and destroy the effect?
Thanks!

March 17, 2009 at 4:57 amI’m confused by your post. When you greenscreen someone and place a background behind them, the background stays exactly how it is. Usually people have the exact opposite problem of wanting the background to move relative to them, using markers/rulers/math software, plugins to create virtual camera moves called “solving”. For instance, Trapcode Horizon will take a picture and move it in relative space to an AE camera and Bonjour will figure out 3-D moves from actual film footage.

March 17, 2009 at 5:17 amThat’s actually what I mean. I want the background to look realistic despite a moving camera. Not long tracking shots or anything. Just a sort of a general hand held “shaky” style with quick zooms that works with a green screened background.
Is that clearer? Thanks.

March 17, 2009 at 6:35 amYour procedure then is using things called “markers” you place directly on your greenscreen to measure distance, speed, etc. You are delving into a very complex workflow and you should read these sites to get a basic understanding of what it involves.

January 13, 2010 at 8:06 amIf the above people didnt answer your question, and your asking what i think your asking read this: 🙂
If you are just shooting a 2d shot (the chroma keyed footage does not rotate around the object/person)in which the background footage (not the chroma keyed footage) is shaky because of camera movement, you can get the character or object to appear “anchored” to the ground in two ways:
1) Create a null object (Layer>New>Null object)
Pick a spot on the background footage and place one of the corners on it.
Then keyframe the position (and scale/rotation if you want) and go frame by frame and move the corner of the null object onto the background object so they match up.
Once you have done that you have “countered” the camera movement and you are ready to parent your green screen footage to the null object.
2)This way is more complicated :/
Open the motion tracker window
Select your background footage the click track motion
Select position, scale or rotaion depending on what your trying to achieve.
Then click one of the play buttons down the bottom to analyze the footage. The two markers will attempt to follow the pixels on which you placed them on at the beginning.
Most of the time it won’t work and i dont recommend this method.
