    Folks,

I have a talking head shot with a lower 3rd that I want to cover with a letterbox. I don’t want to cut the top of the head off, or distort (squeeze) the shot. If I slide the shot down to create the top of the letterbox, is there a way to apply a crop to the top and bottom to create an even letterbox? Or, do I have to just apply a crop to the bottom of the shot and eyeball it? If I crop both top and bottom of the already slid down shot, I get an uneven crop, since the crop starts at the top of video, which is already moved down.
I’m thinking there’s a really easy answer I’m missing. I’m hoping for a simple solution, because I’ll have to apply this to a bunch of shots in the timeline.

    Thanks,
    slim

Just repo the shot accordingly and use the bottom crop tool to bring up the bottom of the frame to match the top. Then just copy and paste the attributes to each shot for consistancy.
    It’s just that easy!

    hi slim

we have to do this kind of thing all the time in order to move subtitles out of frame, so i built a very simple fxscript video generator letter-box to ease the pain. just drag it onto its own layer above the rest of the edit.
if you’d like i’ll gladly send it to you, email me at andymees AT startv DOT com and its yours.

    cheers

I thougth I read somewhere that the “letterbox matte” in the effects actually has an option to move the image up and down within it. I’ve never used it and I can’t check it right now, so I don’t know if that’s true, but it’s worth looking, at least.

Jeff’s right, you can use the ‘Offset’ value to reposition the image, it works great.
a letterbox matte generator can be useful but is certainly not essential
