h.264 steppy rendering in AE
I have a set of PAL h.264 clips that initially all play fine in QuickTime, but if I try to RAM preview them from a timeline in After Effects (CS3) they only play at what appears to be 12fps. If I render them out as any CODEC and playback in QT they are also steppy, though the movie inspector tells me they are still 25fps.

Check your RAM preview settings.
What methods and settings are you using to Render them out.
It’s worth remembering that although AE has some superb video processing tools, it’s not the best solution for use as a transcoder

What settings did you use to render out of AE?
It may be worth double checking your RAM preview settings as well.
I assume when you refer to PAL that the clips are 720×576, what sort of datarate are they at?

All settings are correct (I’ve been using AE for 10 years and never seen this before).
Importing and rendering out other CODECs is fine.
On a related subject, I’ve also noticed that DVD Studio Pro will not recognize h.264 clips…?

Without letting us know what setting you’ve used to render out to H.264 it’s difficult to help you further. I’ve been compressing video for 20 years but I still miss the odd thing now and again.

It doesn’t matter what settings I use, the result is the same. Whether I render out lossless, Sorenson or even back to h.264. The RAM preview plays at half the frame rate and rendered files do too. If I step through the timeline it only gives me every other frame.
The footage interpretation is correct and I’ve triple checked if there’s anything untoward in the render and output settings – I’m using exactly the same settings I’ve used for every job I do.
I’m baffled. The clips still play fine straight from QuickTime. If I pull in another format clip and render out with the same settings there’s no problem.

Baffling indeed. Can you post a sample of the problem clip to yousendit or another similar site?
Without inspecting the clip there’s no way to determine what’s going on.

Nothing wrong with that clip.
It can only be something going wrong in AE.
You’ve obviously treble checked that the RAM preview is not set to preview every other frame, and I’d assume your machine it well up to the task in hand…
Have you tried taking the clip into a brand new comp?
If all the above is checked out ok, I’d suggest a call/email to Adobe support!

Yup, I created a new project and dropped the clip straight into a new comp. Same result. It must be the way AE is interpreting it, from the way it only shows me every other frame when I step through the timeline.
Where you able to try running it through AE yourself?

Are you working in PAL or NTSC land?
