Anyone know how to playout to monitor from a H.264 timeline?

H.264 is not an editing format

You don’t. H.264 isn’t an editing codec, it is a delivery codec. It won’t work thru firewire to a camera or deck, and I don’t think that it will play out via a capture card.
I’d have to test and see. But, as I said, that isn’t an editing codec.
