At least on my machine, a 2006 MacPro with a 5770, 10.6.8, 16GB ram. I noticed that H264 footage from my 7D was not playing in real time, specifically with cross fades and effects applied.

I switched from “better performance” to “high quality” in prefs and now it is playing without dropping frames. Interesting.

It would be curious to know if this was happening with other configurations.

I have FCP X on a 2009 MacBook Pro and high quality is actually slower for me than better performance with Canon DSLR h.264 footage.

I will say that 60p AVCHD h.264 movie files will not playback smoothly no matter what since my machine it just too old. =( I can transcode to ProRes to fix that issue but was hoping not to have to transcode for some smaller projects.
