  • H264 INTERLACED FROM ProResHQ

I have a situation that I’ve searched the web high and low with no good answers:

I’ve got a project that was shot on a 5D at 23.98 that will end up on TV. All the footage has been transcoded from h.264 to ProResHQ.

In FCP, I’ll work and master in ProResHQ 23.98 but will need to output final files for TV at 1920×1080, H.264, 29.97, Interlaced.

    1) What’s the best way, program, or process to use to get a final H264 Interlaced, 29.97 file from ProRes 23.98?

    2) And how can I check to make sure the final file is indeed interlaced?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

i don’t know why you would want interlaced. i use adobe media encoder personally. can export almost any format you can think of. you can select 3:2 pulldown for the 23.98fps, and select a field dominance but i would really just since with progressive.

You say – “will end up on TV”

What has the Station or client told you they need exactly?
    A digital file?
    A Tape?
Do you have an I/O card?
    Which one?

Lay off a Master with your current settings and I’ll bet you’ll be fine.

    Streaming 1080 is always Interlaced.
[Andrew Evans] “you can select 3:2 pulldown for the 23.98fps, and select a field dominance……”
    This is what they want.
    Upper first.

can you explain a bit further- 1080 streaming is always interlaced?

I need to convert to H.264 29.97 interlaced from 23.98 progressive Pro Res.

Can you be a bit more specific about how I do that, what menus in FCP or after effects etc.

    thanks.

    It will “air” on TV.

    Deliverable is: 1920X1080, 29.97, INTERLACED, H.254 file.

No IO card- just straight out of a desktop computer with FCP and AFX installed.

    Yes Dennis.
The think is that there is not

    From Wikipedia: HD/SD-SDI

“.. Supported formats include 1080/60i, 1080/59.94i, 1080/50i, 1080/30p, 1080/29.97p, 1080/25p, 1080/24p, 1080/23.98p, 720/60p, 720/59.94p, and 720/50p. In addition, there are ……. and various 1080psf (progressive, segmented frame) formats. Progressive Segmented frames formats appear as interlace video but contain video which is progressively scanned. This is done to support analog monitors and televisions, many of which are incapable of locking to low field rates such as 30 Hz and 24 Hz”.

The thing is that your 1080p stuff (p24 or p30) must be packed as 1080i60 to travel through any SMPTE compliant system. So 1080p30 clips will be sent sequentially as (Odd lines first, then Even lines) as regular 1080i60 stuff. The same for p24, but adding pull-down.
Although displayed as i60, the monitor will be showing but the 24 or 30 progressive picture.
