  • H264 / h263 encoding problems with Windows PC?

Posted by Vladislav on August 2, 2005 at 8:44 pm

Few days ago I encoded few things for the web out of FCP 5 using H264 codec. It looked great, file was small, everything was beautiful, except It didn’t work on Windows PC. I can’t use h264 for windows machines? or am I doing somethign wrong? I’v done this many times before using other codecs and everythign worked, this was my first time using h264.
    Thank you in advance,

You must have Quicktime 7 installed on the PC to view H.264. It’s now available for public preview at the Quicktime section on Apple’s site.

So since it’s not widely distributed in Windows land yet, it wouldn’t be wise to use it, right?

So something like Sorenson Video 3 codec would be ok I’d think?

All depends on your needs. I’m switching all my website movies to H.264 with a disclaimer than QT 7 is required to view along with a link to the Apple Quicktime page so the viewer can download the files.

    Thank you for your help.
Yeah for our own website we are doing the same, but to hand something to the client who simply requested quicktime file for the web, I think it’s safer using the windiow friendlier codec for now.
    thanks again,
    Vlad
