H.264 Gamma Bug – Player or File?
So H.264 seems to be an extremely popular compression format in general, and especially for the web, where it is often the recommended compression. But I’m also reading over and over again about a gamma bug which results in H.264 video looking washed out (which just confirms what I’ve experienced myself previously).

Does H.264 video look washed out ONLY when viewed in a Quicktime player (like is the problem with the player and not the video itself)? Or is the problem really inside the video file itself (so that it would be washed out no matter how you viewed it)? If the problem is with the file itself and not just a bug with the Quicktime player, then how the heck did this format get to be so popular if it looks horrible?

The bug is with Quicktime, not H.264. It’s specific to the Quicktime implementation of Quicktime, not the H.264 standard. Quicktime is not just a player.
Nobody ever said the bug makes the video look horrible, it’s a subtle shift, not catastrophic.
