h264 Fade Up Looks awful
I am preparing a video to be run off a lap top for a presentation. After consultation here (thanks everyone) I decided to go with H.264.
However, the fade into my piece looks terrible (and there are a lot of artifacts as well.) I uploaded the first 4 seconds or so here

https://www.extravaganzacreative.com/Milk2/settings/I wonder again, am I using the right codec for presentation (H.264?) I have used Compressor before but have not really played with the settings. Are there tweaks I can do in there to get this to look better? Or in FCP? Any help is very much appreciated!!!!!!

A few observations:
Exporting from FCP is never going to give you good results. Use compressor!
I’m confused by the use of a DV frame size (720×480), square pixels and an anamorphic flag.
You should be using a frame size like 720×400 square pixel – that will give you a correct 16:9 (1.77:1) frame. At the moment your frame aspect ratio is 1.5:1 which is neither 4:3 or 16:9 but somewhere in between.
Correct the frame size, use compressor and things will look much better.

The use of my frame size 720 by 480 square pixels was an aesthetic decision … as this was not for broadcast and presentation only I thought that I would have the flexibility to do this. At this stage of the game I am locked into that aspect ration (unless I recreate all of my graphics from scratch.) Is this going to be a problem?

Thank you Daniel. When I get into Compressor is there anything I should watch out for. Should I set keyframes to automatic, or to some other figure to get best quality. I am setting everything to best so far ..

Keyframes to automatic. Forced keyframes at 10x your frame rate so in your case every 300 frames or every 10 seconds, if you still have problems with fades (which you should make last at least 2 seconds) reduce that to every 150 frames
