H.264 encoding problems
I am having a very hard time getting an H.264 file to encode as I desire. Have been messing with this for days. 🙁
Firstly… I am assuming 3-4Mbps is a good bitrate to shoot for. My target is web usage, so I want to keep the filesize low but the quality high. I know H.264 can have great quality at ~3Mbps because I have downloaded many x264 HDTV (720p) shows that look phenomenal even on a bigscreen, and they are usually 1.10GB/42min =~ 3.5Mbps.
My source is HDV 1080i. My target resolution is 1280×720, I’m using Vegas 8.0b and I have the K-lite mega codec pack installed which should have everything I need, x264, etc… (right?). I see two options in Vegas that will produce an H.264 .mp4 file as far as I can tell: MainConcept AVC/AAC and Sony AVC.
Using Sony AVC, I can only get it to work at 15Mbps (starting at 15Mbps Blu-Ray template, and changing system format from avc to mp4 to allow audio, and changing resolution from 1080i to 1280×720 1.000 pixel AR). This works, and looks great… only problem is that it is 15Mbps… or 4 times too large filesize! So I try to change bitrate lower, and get the error “no compatible video codec was found.”
So, then I try MainConcept AVC/AAC option. I can get it to work at 4Mbps and the filesize is of course acceptable (this was my target). Only problem… it looks like crap in two ways. One, there is blocky artifacting everywhere (this artifacting is not present in the x264 encoded TV shows I download, and they are encoded at the same bitrate). Two, there is interlace flicker everywhere, despite the face that I have “reduce interlace flicker” selected in the clip properties, which successfully gets rid of the flicker when rendering in any other format.
I am at my wit’s end here, does anybody have any suggestions? Thanks!!!
