    Dear Creative Cow forum,

Pardon the long intro. My basic need is to edit Canon HDSLR footage in Premiere Pro CS5 and use dynamic link with other applications. I am a seasoned Final Cut and Avid editor. I am now trying to learn Premiere CS5 (for work) by editing footage I shot with a Canon T1i (HDSLR). The footage is 1280 x 720 30p H264 codec. Initially, I compressed the clips to Apple Pro Res 422 and imported them into Adobe Premiere. I noticed that there were no presets for the Apple Pro Res footage, and I could not find a way to edit the sequence presets after the fact.

I did see an HDSLR preset that matches my original camera footage. 6 months ago I edited native Canon 7D (HDSLR) footage in Final Cut Pro 7 and it was a nightmare. It seriously taxed my computer, and effects and subtitle renders were unpredictable. I would love to know if I will experience the same fate by editing H264 footage in Premiere Pro CS5.

Also, I could not find a compressor or export function(other than export DV only) in Adobe Production Suite CS5. Am I missing something? Thank you for reading this long post, and most important, thank you in advance for your great advice.

    Eddie

CS5 is really good with a very wide range of formats including H.264 and you should find it nice and easy. Issues with multiple layers of H.264 can happen as the processors can get pushed to the limit if you try and do too many PiPs (picture in picture) but even so, if you have a reasonably good machine you should be fine if you keep it to 1 or 2 layers at a time – I’ve seen five layers working – just.

As for export, first thing, select the sequence in the timeline and then choose file>Export>Media. This will open the Media Encoder and you can get any codecs you already have on your machine through that. Have a play and have fun. Andrew

the computer specs that i am woking on

    Windows 7 professional 64 bits
    Intel® Core™ i7 processors
    8 GB of RAM
1 tera RAID drive (2 hard drives 7200 rpm)
    Nvidia Geforce 285 GTX

i found some solutions to work with H.264 file on some forums
    https://forums.creativecow.net/thread/3/900429

i tried the solutions to work with cineform and convert the files but it didn’t work because it said is not a compatible file, converting to DV AVI format is still being slow for playback.

The software that came with the camera TOTALMEDIA EXTREME2 has an editor on it and the it has real playback on real time but the editor is so basic and i need to make a music video and professional edits and effects, how can i see real playback on premiere with this files

i upload one file so you can download to see if that works in your computer and hope get a solution to get edit this videos

Hi Andrew, what you exactly mean for “reasonably good machine”? I’m buying a new pc and I would work editing in Premere CS5 the Canon 7D and 5D native footage. Do you think a system like this can work without problem?

    Processor: Intel Core i5 – 2,530 GHz
    RAM: 4 GB (to 8) – 1.066 MHz
Video Card: Nvidia (model GeForce GT420M) – 1.024 mb (max 3.582 mb)

    Thanks
