[d hudson] “Flip cam is orig 1280 x 720 H264 AAC converted with Compressor to ProRess 422 (lt) various audio have been tried currently set at Linear PCM 16b “

RIght so the frame rate is what? 30? If so, that’s your problem. Your frame rates aren’t matching.

I was starting to think that might be the issue. So FCP would always have to render these few clips because they are at 30 not 23 like the rest of the footage, correct?

That’s right. You can use Compressor to make new 23.976 media from the 720p30 media, or you can use a common denominator, which would be to use a ProRes 720p59.94 1280×720 timeline. You will still need to render, but shouldn’t get a red line. Do me a favor, for one of your ProRes clips that you converted, what does the frame rate say in the browser 30 or 29.97?

OK, that will be a problem.

this is what I suggest you do. Remake the ProRes clips, but change the frame rate 29.97 in the vidoe settings tab, and perhaps you should make the clips DVCPro HD instead of ProRes if you are going to be editing in a DVCPro HD timeline anyway

Then in the frame controls tab, at the very bottom there’s the Rate Conversion option. Click that option that says ‘So source frames play @ 29.97’. This will ever so slightly slow down your footage, but it will be imperceptible, especially on such short clips. This will give you 960×720 DVCPro HD 29.97 clips. Also, make sure to setup the audio like I said before.

Now, setup a DVCPro HD timeline @ 59.94 fps. Like I said, you should still have to render, but it won’t be a red line, but rather a green rt line.

Hope that all makes sense. Try one clip as a test.
