guide for compressing videos for web
hi… im’ sort of a novice with web stuff. i’m creating an interactive art project where clicking on objects makes videos play in a website. the website is flash-based, and i’m working with a flash developer, but he is inexperienced with video compression specs, so our workflow is that i am supposed to make these videos and then he is charge of getting them into the flash project.
so basically my workflow is i’m shooting with a DSLR (canon T21) many short videos that all look alike. they are videos of a hand writing words, so resolution and display size are somewhat critical (i.e. if the resolution isn’t good enough, the user can’t read the writing clearly). i started with exporting quicktimes from FCP and then using compressor to compress to H264 .mov files. these files are much smaller than my source files (for example a 1.4 GB file compresses down to 12 MB). but my flash guy keeps telling me these files are still too big and won’t play back smoothly on a website. i am not sure what to do to get the file size down more (he is suggesting half or a third of the size) while still keeping good quality. the thing is i’ve put a few of these clips on vimeo for comparison, and i really like the quality and how they look there… and there does not seem to be any playback problem. so what are they doing, and how can i achieve comparable quality? i know they use mp4, but i tried making an mp4 in compressor with no significant improvement in file size. if anyone can help me think through some parameters for improving my compression results, i would be so grateful.
