In Shake I can take a layer that’s a mask, and use DialateErode to grow it. Essentially the opposite action that Matte Choker does in After Effects.

So can I grow the edges of a matte in After Effects? I’m drawing a blank.

under the menu for the mask there should be a thing that says “mask expansion”

Right on that. But I’m not drawing masks, I’m using a black&white video image as a “track matte: alpha layer”. That’s what I need to grow.

oh sorry, you said mask at one point so that tripped me up.

hmm i’ll have to try some things out. someone will probably think of something better by the time i figure a decent way out.

I can kinda get Matte Choker to expand it a little, but it gets awfully noisy.

i just rendered it out in Shake and brought it into AE. But there must be a way to do this otherwise.

Simple Choker usually works well for choking/expanding something after it has been matted. You can also look at Minimax under the Channel effects to run a minimum/maximum operation on the RGB or Alpha channels.
