To group (or ungroup) a bunch of clips, I ctrl-click each one, then press G (or U). If some clips/events are very tiny, there is a danger of not seeing them, and missing them.

Simply selecting a length of the timeline (shift-arrow or click-drag), then pressing G — does not work.

Is there some magic button I could add to the second method that would make it work?

Is there another solution to the problem?

I just showed this technique earlier today for some students so I know that it works.
Click the first one, shift-click the last one, press G or U and you’re done.
I find it helpful to drop a marker at the start and end of a large section like this to make sure I get all clips.

I just press D twice, drag across the selection, then press D again twice to return to the regular cursor, and off you go – to U or G etc
