Activity Forums Avid Media Composer Grinner vs. Avid

Which Avid product are you on? This may have alot to do with things. If it’s XpressPro, that really does offer some bang for the buck. It’s Adrenaline I have a beef with. I love DS but feel it’s over priced. I often feel like Avid is trying to force those of us coming from Meriden-based smphonies to that price point because everything else is they offer now is a down grade from where we were. DS certainly would be a step up but being a one man band, it’s current price tag is out of reach. I selected Adrenaline largely based on my being able to hop right on it and not interrupt workflow, it’s price and the capabibilities Avid advertises. I paid no more than I thought I would so thats no gripe. The interface is the same so again, no surprises. It’s just not ready for release to this day in my humble opinion. I think it would make a fine application in the $10k range after a few more updates/bug fixes.
That said, you’ll not hear me say anything bad about my vendor. They are awesome. They bend over backwards to please and they too have fallen victim to what many percieve as shinanigans. Prolly why they offer FCP now.

I’m on an Xpress Pro with Mojo, which is affordable and does what I need it to do. However, as you may have noted from my previous posts, it’s not entirely bug free. I can’t render timecode, which means I have to spend an hour creating a Quicktime for output. And it won’t digitize useable video from VHS which is often how I get stock footage. However, I’m now asking clients to provide stock shots on DVD’s or ftp sites and just allowing extra time for my outputs. I think that the only system I’ve worked on in the past 15 years of NLE that never crashed and never gave me any trouble was a Symphony and I sure can’t afford to buy one of those!

You may be surprised at what yu can find a used Symphony for. I’d venture to say less than 10k in some cases. Surf ebay from time to time and you will stumble into an awesome deal.
I know XpressPro isn’t bug free but becase it’s price is so much lowr than Adrenaline’s fewer people complain. PLus, many are graduating into it from a consumer application and really are impressed.

The last few releases of Avid have been buggy–5.5 to 5.6.x on Xpress Pro, and 2.5-2.6.x on Media Composer especially.

However, 5.7 and 2.7 both seem much more stable. 5.7 especially is a lot more responsive, has less errors (actually, I don’t think we’ve had errors since we went to 5.7), and overall feels like a good, solid release.

Grinner does have an opinion of dissent sometimes, but he’s also been there and done that. Much of what I learned on Avid I’ve learned by searching this forum and reading his posts. While I disagree with some of his opinions, I also respect them because the man knows his stuff and he helps first, then tears Avid apart.

Avid needs that, just like Apple needs it, Adobe needs it, we all need it. Help me fix my current problem, then remind me what else is wrong so the product gets better in the future.

    My 2 cents.

    Michael.

You mean the previous releases before 5.x were not buggy? I gave it up in the 4

That’s quite a history Dennis! I had no idea so much was going on, just quietly plugging away at whatever system a client put in front of me. Now that I’ve invested in my own gear–the above-mentioned XpressPro, I have a lot more interest in all of this. Wish I had figured out that I could acquire a used Symphony for about the same that I paid for the new gear. That was such a stable machine.

I love the last line of your post and think you might have really enjoyed a Final Cut Pro promotional campaign launched by Carbon Computing here in Toronto several years ago. They used old Soviet political posters, with socialist realist figures holding up G4’s and FCP programmes, declaring “Digital Video for the People!”, Lenin declaring “Our System Has Failed” and Carbon Computing advertising “Systems Designed to Conquer the World!”.

    Hey Cathy,

Somehow I missed that ad campaign. I am actually a Toronto boy myself (West end). Home base is Halifax now (between trips to Russia) and the family loves it, but I try to get back to Toronto once or twice a year. It’d be great to have a coffee and exchange war stories some time. From what I read in your profile, we are both Boomers. If you are the Cathy G. in the ODC, I can find you through there. I am in the ARC.

Dennis, I remember sitting in a taxi in New York with you….You were telling me how much better Avid was than media100. I will be moving onto a Symphony Ni9tris in the next few weeks….my first Avid product (If you don’t count Avid Liquid and other acquired technology).. I am excited, but at the same time a little worried by reading this thread.

Grinner, keep on keeping on. You gotta keep giving your opinion….once you stop doing that, well you may as well dissapear from the mods position. I have always enjoyed your humour, wisdom and general good nature.

    Regards

    Mark Harvey
