Grid overlay for the Viewer?
Posted by Brian Thomas on March 1, 2019 at 4:54 pmSomeone had the camcorder at an angle of about 5 or so degrees all the time – duh!
To get it straight it would be SO helpful to be able to turn on some sort of grid overlay in the viewer window rather than having to get a ruler out and measure the distances from the uprights in the image from the edges of the screen. Is that sort of facility sitting there somewhere just waiting for me to hit the right keystrokes….?
Many thanks in advance.

March 1, 2019 at 7:59 pmIf you go to view menu you can turn on the horizon which gives a cross hairs across the video.
I’m pretty sure there are some FCPX grid generators out there that are free. In fact I think ripple has one that they ported from (recreated) FCP legacy. Ah it’s here… https://www.rippletraining.com/products/free-plugins/legacy-generators/
But If that’s not enough I do have a grid/guides plugin that is pretty robust with a number of other features like center crops, guides, film zones, coordinates, etc https://bretfx.com/product/power-guides/

March 3, 2019 at 6:14 amJust wanted to say I love Bret’s power guides plugin. I’ve been using it on almost every project for several months now. I would still like to see Apple implement a built-in grid overlay in a future update, but considering this hasn’t been done after all these years, I’m not holding my breath. In the mean time, this tool from Bret is a great, and very affordable solution.

March 3, 2019 at 4:26 pmMany thanks for that Brett. I wasn’t looking for anything free and I’ve just paid for your Power-Guide feature. Works just great, thanks!
I couldn’t actually find what you mentioned, the “view menu” where ” you can turn on the horizon” but that’s not important now that I have your plugin.
Thanks again!

March 3, 2019 at 7:24 pmThanks Brian! In the canvas, upper right. The view “pulldown” menu I guess I should say. Also where you turn on safe zones and such. I think with 10.4 they added a little cross hair (think submarine periscope) view. They call it horizon.
