    That doesn’t look good. Try cleaning the heads. Either it’s a bad recording, in which case there’s nothing you can do except reshoot, or the playback device has dirty heads and if you clean them you’ll be good to go.

    Or, you playback deck is set to the wrong settings. (i.e. tape shot at 1080i and deck set to playback 720p)

    UPDATE: I used a mini dv head cleaner and NO CHANGE 🙁

    I forgot to add that I’m not using a deck (unfortunately) I’m using my Canon ZR200 mini dv. I’m aware this runs down the camera and will eventually break it…could this have happened?

    Could be the material is shot in DVCAM, which a Canon camera will not play back.

    so….were the tapes shot with this camera? if not, what format were they shot in? do you have any other source to either send into the FCP, or to play the tapes on? do the tapes play back correctly in the camera? capture settings set correctly in FCP?

    once you have checked and answered these questions, we could pinpoint what maybe going on.
