Green Screen keying problem
Posted by John Hunter on January 28, 2009 at 6:44 pmIn the footage that I’m keying there is a logo with a green background on the subject’s uniform (see picture below).
What is the best way to prevent that from keying out with the green screen?David Bogie replied 17 years, 3 months ago 3 Members · 5 Replies -

January 28, 2009 at 7:20 pmMake a copy of your footage and mask around the area so the keyer is not processing it. You will need to move the mask around and keyframe it manually or just apply motion tracking to it.
The best chroma keying always requires several copies of the same footage stacked in layers with different filters and effects applied to each. You may need to apply masks, more or less chroma keying, matte choke, or light wraps to any of them.

January 28, 2009 at 7:39 pmThanks a million David! That totally makes sense! Now I just need to figure out how to apply Motion Tracking to the mask that I made (used the pen tool to trace the logo area).

January 28, 2009 at 7:45 pmIf you really want to go the motion tracking route, all you need to do is create a small layer about 2x the size of the hole you want to fill. Track the shot and then position the layer over the hole. Apply the tracking data to a null then parent the small layer to the null. Next, duplicate your original footage, place it below the small layer and switch the track matte to the small layer alpha matte. This will fill in the hole and you dont have to motion track any masks.
Depending on the length of your shot and the amount of motion, it may be easier to just animate the pen mask with keyframes.
Let me know if you have any questions.
Best of luck

January 28, 2009 at 7:52 pmthanks guys! I’m gonna try the motion tracking. I also want to try it just because I’m new to AE and am curious/excited!

That’s probably more detail than you need, John. You just need a rough rectangle or ellipse that covers the green in the logo. You’re just holding it back from processing, it doesn’t need to be pretty or even accurate. The mask layer doesn’t need chroma keying at all.
You’ll see what I mean as soon as you start messing with this.
