I have an HDV project shot on green screen. I have keyed out the green. I now need to export it to After Effects. When I export the .mov file which was exported as a Full Resolution Millions Color Plus Animation codec file to AE it opens up with a black background where it should be transparent. When I view it in FCP the background where the green used to be is gone. I can see the checker boards. What am I doing wrong?

    Why key before AE?

Anyway, duplicate your sequence, and in that duplicated sequence, Select all then hit control-b, then hit control-b again. That will shake loose the render files, export as animation millions+. In order to get the alpha channel, the footage needs NOT to be rendered.

    Hi Jeremy,

Sending it over without rendering did the trick. I would not have thought of that. Have you ever used ultimatte for keying? If so how did you like it? It was not my choice to do the keying in FCP.

[michael_kroesenx] “Have you ever used ultimatte for keying?”

Years and years ago until we needed to upgrade to OSX. In between that time someone had broken in the studio and stole the key. Ultimatte wasn’t sympathetic so we ended up not getting it again. Are you using Ultimatte? We had great luck with it when it was around on the 0s9 days. I use Boris Continuum Complete for my keys now. Does a good job on well shot footage. The only I reason I do that is so I can keep everything in FCP. If i need to go to AE I use autoduck for my sequence, then I key in AE with Keylight and get great results there as well. SO if I don’t need AE, BCC, if I do need AE, Keylight.

Hey Dave, actually it works. You just have to have the sequence unrendered. Check it out, he said it worked for him.

So, once I export it unrendered do I need to do anything else for it to work on a website with a translucent background? Does it have to be brought into AE to get rid of the black background I see when I play it in Quicktime? It works keyed when I bring it back into FC and put a JPEG or something behind it. Thanks.
