Got tired of beating my head against the standard FCP chroma keyer, looked through the other filters in my collection, tried Boris Continuum Complete and… MAN! Between the keyer and the matt choker I immediately got vastly better keys. Fuzziness, dark edges, rippling, green spill… all gone. I normally used the FCP keyer before because it is real time with Cinewave but now that we have dynamic RT these other filters are much easier to preview. Even if you prefer the FCP keyer a matt choker is really helpful. This is old hat to many I’m sure but there must be a few out there who migh find this useful.

Boris Continuum Complete should really be a standard plug-in set for any editor as it’s just full of all “widgets” you need for many effects. The Chroma Keyer is certainly outstanding as are the film effects.

    Walter,

    Hi,

May I ask, in your opinion, which is a better chroma keyer, Boris Continuum or ‘DV Matte Pro’ from DV Garage?

    Yours,

    Wayne

Hi Wayne, I have never used the DV Matte Pro so I have no idea on the quality. I’m sure someone on this forum has it.

    Wayne,

I have been using DVmatte Pro for a couple of years. It is outstanding. I use it for keying and sometimes to generate mattes to use in AE. It will seamlessly key even badly lit greenscreens. And while it was designed for use with DV footage, it works just great with uncompressed. I have no experience with it and HD material however.

We had a pretty good discussion on it last year here, Marco Solario (I think) swears by Ultimatte, but he agreed that DMP is vastly superior to FCP keyer, and it costs about a fifth the price of Ultimatte.

    Walter, (Wally?)

Thanks for the recommendation. This compelled me to finally download the trial version of Boris Continuum, and I was so impressed that we’re already ordering it for the studio. I just got my boss to squeak it in under the wire on this fiscal year. It’s an awesome deal, especially if you can wrangle the educational rate.

Anyway, thanks for the tip. This basically doubles the number of effects on my system, which means flashier promos, which means happier clients. (I know effects don’t make the editor, but it’s nice to have more bells & whistles at my disposal.) Thanks a lot.

    [Steve Courtney] “Walter, (Wally?)”

I’ll answer to both, especially if there’s food involved. 🙂

Glad we could help. It’s just a great widget set of filters and effects. Even the simple DVE’s in the Distort pack are just great for rotating and flipping things and you’ll love the lighting effects too.

    Enjoy!
