Hi, I am fairly new to this program, and I am trying to understand the gravity effect in the dynamic module.

I am going for a pretty straightforward animation of 3D text falling onto a surface, but I want to make the text feel very heavy with minimal bounce. After dropping the Text, Gravity, and Plane into a Solver Object, and adding Rigid Body dynamics to the text and plane, it defaults to a very bouncy effect. When I adjust the parameters for the 3D text object though, the text hits the surface, but slowly keeps pulling through it which not only causes an undesired effect but starts bogging down my comp!

Can someone help me understand what’s happening and what parameters I should be adjusting?

You turned the Elasticity on the text way down yes? It hits, does not bounce (much) and immediately sits on the surface and the Gravity keeps trying to drag it through – but the collision eps is reached or exceeded, lots of calculations (since the entire surface is in contact) so it bogs down. Even worse if you are using Full Collision rather than box for your text.
The fix is simple, in Solver Object/Details check off ‘Collision Use Rest Speed’ this stops the Gravity from dragging the text once it goes below a set speed (which you may need to adjust) so the text hits, can even bounce a bit, then stops.
You may want to up the Subsampling rate in the Solver Object/Main tab particularly if you lower the Collision eps.

Why yes, my setting are as you described! I will implement your recommendations, thank you very much!

Following your suggestions, I played with the collision EPS and subsampling, but cannot seem to isolate a cause for the text to continue pulling. Somewhere around Subsampling at 8 and Collision EPS at 16 I get a somewhat desirable effect, but every parameter I adjust seems to set me back to either collisions with way too much bounce or an awkward halt and pull.

I also notice that the text seems to be colliding just above the surface of the plane. There seem to be so many adjustable parameters I don’t know where to begin!

What fundamental concepts am I missing that are causing these results?

did you check ‘Collision Use Rest Speed’ in Solver Object/Details?

check out the Help for the Solver Object Details tab. It explains more completely (and with diagrams too) than I easily could.
