For HD you can use just about any font you want, especially with progressive formats.

thank you. do you think we should build them in Livetype first to have a better “cut” or Boris?

Is that the color red you want to use?

The “non-serif” fonts such as Arial, Verdana, Trebuchet all do quite well. Avoid serifs and those that have thin, sharp edges.

As Walter says, just about any font looks good in HD, but you never know where your project will end up, so you should plan on it ultimately winding up as SD, which is why the I continue to use and recommend the non-serif fonts.

Thank you both. What about Livetype over Boris 3d? Do you guys use Livetype for your fonts? ever?

[hdfilmmaker] “Do you guys use Livetype for your fonts? ever?”

I find animated that text can be very distracting, but then I work quite a bit in very conservative documentaries that are mostly about content. On the other hand, there are times when only animated text will do, and in those instances Livetype can be a possibility. I also find it good for storing lower thirds and BGs together for longform projects that require the same ID to be used numerous times.

Thanks, I like to use the font tool in FCP.

You’ll be better of NOT using FCP’s built in text generator. The last time I used it it assigned a value of 100 IRE to the whites. It also isn’t very friendly when doing complex layout.
In your original question you asked what font HD Discovery uses. That depends on the show. Each network and each program has different font requirements, sizes, kerning, drop shadow etc. This can usually be found in the delivery requirements from the network. In most cases the network will send you the font. These are to be used for lower 3rds, and end credits. If you’re not beholden to network requirements that use whatever looks best creatively. We use both Boris Title, LiveType, RED, Motion etc. But when delivering for broadcast we use the fonts they tell us.
