    Hi,
I am a film tech student from the UK and I have recently built a new computer system with HD video in After Effects in mind. The spec is Intel Core2 Quad CPU @2.40GHz,160Gb System HDD and 1Tb media HDD, 4GB RAM. But a cheap graphics card because (as a student) I didn’t really have much spare cash. But now I have some cash available I have been thinking about upgrading my graphics card.
I have looked through other threads, and people seem to be saying that It’s not worth it BUT I find that one of the things that slows me down is the speed it takes for previews etc when I change effect parameters etc. if I got a new graphics card, would this improve? I have been thinking of getting a Geforce 7950 GX2 (as I think it’s in my price range) but I’m not sure if it would be any good?
I just want to know if anyone thinks that it would be worth it or not, and if you think that it would be worth it, which graphics card would you suggest?

    Peace,
    Andi

No, for the reasons we’ve stated before. Open GL is the only thing that speeds up graphics-card-based rendering to screen, but Open GL on AE isn’t well implemented, so most AE users switch it off.

The only reason to upgrade the card would be to use apps such as Motion, Color, Cinema 4D and others. Not AE.

It would be a waste of money, and once you’ve realized it, you’d kick yourself when you couldn’t afford something you really need like more RAM or a third-party plugin.
